Under the Graduated License Program, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all drivers under the age of 16 to complete a 30 hour Colorado drivers ed course. This applies to students between the ages of 15 and 15½ who are applying for a driver education permit and students between 15½ and 16 who are applying for a driver awareness permit. The Colorado DMV does not require students over the age of 16 to complete a formal drivers ed program, however, these students can benefit from taking the course.

Students under the age of 16½ must also complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driver training with a professional driver or 12 hours of driving instruction with a parent or legal guardian when an approved driver education school is not located within 30 miles of your residence.

Additionally, in order to receive a Colorado drivers license, students under the age of 18 must also log 50 hours of practice driving on Form DR 2324 and held their drivers instruction permit for at least 12 months.
